First international call from Ipko’s GSM network

The first international test telephony connection through Ipkonet’s new GSM network in Kosovo was established on Tuesday. The connections from Priština to Ljubljana were made without any problems and performed well. As we already reported, the experts from Telekom Slovenije, Mobitel and Ipkonet conducted a test call within the new mobile network in October.

The consortium consisting of Telekom Slovenije, Mobitel and Ipkonet won a concession to become the second GSM mobile telephony operator in Kosovo. Network construction began immediately. The priority is coverage of larger towns and the so-called Kosovo city ring. The promise that the first part of the GSM network will be operational by the end of this year is now being fulfilled.

Along with the 75 million euro the companies paid for the concession, the construction of the GSM network in Kosovo will cost at least an additional 120 million euro, which brings the total to almost 200 million euro. The Telekom Slovenije Group plans to reach a 50-percent market share in the next five years and close to a million subscribers of GSM services in about eight years.
